Vena cava filters were introduced in the 1960s as a mechanical means to prevent pulmonary embolism (PE).1 Since that time, the number of filters placed has grown steadily, to over 49,000 annually in the United States alone.2 However, patients with vena cava filters can develop complications from the filter itself, which can lead to significant morbidity and, rarely, mortality.

Veins are the blood vessels that bring oxygen-poor blood and waste products back to the heart. The vena cava filter (VCF) is intended to prevent the progression of deep venous thrombosis to pulmonary embolism. Recently, the indications for VCF placement have expanded, likely due in part to newer retrievable inferior vena caval filters and minimally invasive techniques. Inferior vena cava (IVC) filter thrombosis can be fatal when it is not detected and treated. Its management can be challenging, because little evidence supports specific treatments. We present the case of a 72-year-old man with a history of deep vein thrombosis in whom IVC filter thrombosis developed 7 years after filter placement. Presentation and Management of Inferior Vena Cava Thrombosis IVCT is a rare event and is associated with known risk factors for venous thromboembolism.

PE can occur in roughly 25% of patients presenting with IVCT.

Caval filters are used for two primary indications: (1) the prevention of PE in patients with known deep venous thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism where standard medical therapy is contraindicated, ineffective, or has to be interrupted and (2) for prophylaxis in patients without known venous thromboembolism when the risk for the development of DVT/PE is high and medical therapy is contraindicated.

nferior Vena Cava (IVC) filters are commonly used as an alternative to anticoagulation in cases of recurrent Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) for prevention of Pulmonary Thromboembolism (PTE). However, IVC filter insertion may be associated with higher incidence of thrombotic complications such as vena cava thrombosis, insertion-site (2011). Inferior Vena Cava Filter Thrombosis: A Review of Current Concepts, Evidence, and Approach to Management. Hospital Practice: Vol. 39, No. 3, pp. 79-86. Inferior vena cava filters are implanted scaffolds, usually self-expanding nitinol, designed to entrap migratory venous thromboemboli. They are placed in patients with lower extremity venous thrombosis in whom systemic anticoagulation is contraindicated or unsuccessful in preventing pulmonary embolism.

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are utilized to provide mechanical thromboprophylaxis to prevent pulmonary embolism (PE) or to avoid bleeding from systemic anticoagulation. Patients and methods A retrospective analysis of 107 cancer patients who had IVC filters inserted and followed up at our institution was performed.

30 Nov 2020 Placing a filter in the inferior vena cava (IVC) is an important way to prevent significant pulmonary embolism (PE) arising from a deep vein

An inferior vena cava filter (IVC filter) is a small umbrella-like devices that can be inserted into the inferior vena cava in order to prevent pulmonary emboli in patients with deep vein thrombosis or at risk for deep vein thrombosis. Inferior vena cava filters may be optional (retrievable) or permanent.
